Winter driving presents a host of challenges, such as those due to lower air temperatures, snow and ice. Others, including reduced visibility resulting from fewer daylight hours, are less apparent. No matter, there are steps you can take to make sure you arrive at your destination safe and sound.
Make sure you’re prepared, by following these winter driving safety tips:
- Maximize your visibility. Before you start driving, remove all snow and ice from your vehicle, not just the windshield. All windows should also be defrosted before you drive.
- Fill your windshield washer reservoir with a non-freezing washer solution.
- Make sure your headlights, taillights and running lights work and are free of snow.
- Slow down.
- Increase the distance between your car and the one in front of you.
- Be aware of road surface conditions. Deep shade or reflections from bright sun can obscure hazardous conditions.
- Approach bridges, shady areas, and overpasses with caution. They may still be icy when the rest of the roadway is clear and dry.
- Use snow tires for extra traction. Chains, where allowed, can further increase your car’s grip on snow and ice.
